Today is Earth Day -- but the event's original organizers say the day has been cheapened by creeping eco-consumerism and has lost much of its relevance. With companies pushing Earth Day vacation packages, stuffed toys and novelty umbrellas, old-school environmentalists say that as green has gone mainstream, their movement has lost its edge. "This ridiculous perverted marketing has cheapened the concept of what is really green," says Denis Hayes, the first Earth Day's national coordinator. "It is tragic."
