Exports can be an important way for small businesses to grow, and the government has urged more businesses to use them. "Let's face it: In order to have a great business these days, you have to be in the global markets," says skin-care entrepreneur Djuana Munn, who wants to export to spas and resorts in the Caribbean. But issues such as cash flow and payment terms can be tricky for first-time exporters, and extra insurance might be required. One tip: Start with Canada as your practice market.
