To graduate from high school, seniors should complete a final project, argues Washington Post education columnist Jay Mathews -- a practice that already has been adopted by many private schools and by schools that follow the International Baccalaureate program. However, Mathews writes that many other schools are reluctant to assign the projects, which can include essays, internships, community service or other assignments. The projects help students take a personal interest in learning, Mathews argues.
