City leaders in Boston say a major convention center hotel is needed close to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, and taxpayer help will be needed to help pay part of the estimated $700 million bill. The city is striving to become one of the nation's top five convention destinations, and officials said a 1,000-room hotel is needed to bring in major events. Ideas for a project include one that would combine tax breaks, public funds for road work and other upgrades, and hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer-backed debt.
