The U.S. announced new joint U.S.–South Korean naval exercise as a demonstration of its "unequivocal" military support for South Korea -- a demonstration matched by an unsuccessful diplomatic mission to China to persuade it to abandon its support for North Korea. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was unable to persuade her Chinese counterparts to condemn publicly North Korean leader Kim Jong-il for the torpedo attack that sank a South Korean warship in March. The U.S. has not adjusted its military readiness in the region and has no plans to send additional U.S. troops there at this time.
