Taxpayers who call the Internal Revenue Service's toll-free assistance lines are at risk of having their personal information divulged, according to a report by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. IRS employees sometimes fail to properly authenticate the identity of the callers, and there are also risks that the information being discussed will be overheard. The report analyzed 180 calls and found assessors failed to properly authenticate 29 of the callers.
