Kennedy International Airport has reopened its longest runway, and airport officials feel vindicated that many passengers never even realized it had been closed for four months of construction. Throughout the $376 million project, flight delays remained consistent with year-earlier levels, despite some experts' fears of massive backups and tarmac delays. The runway improvements should reduce delays, cut maintenance costs and extend the useful life of the runway by 40 years.
