A new foreign language program at a Maryland school has been a success in its first year, educators say. The Foreign Language Experience -- or FLEX -- program has students learning a different language each year in grades 5 through 8 based on research that shows a sampler program works best if less than 5% of weekly instructional time is spent on foreign languages. The program this year included lessons in geography, culture and customs, along with instruction in sign language, Latin, Greek, Italian and Chinese.
