New York's state comptroller is investigating the auditing practices of the state's Department of Taxation and Finance in response to an NFIB request after an increase in audits of restaurants, bars and other businesses that frequently deal with large amounts of cash. The tax department is searching for companies that miss state sales tax payments. "All of this, hopefully, will force the department to be more accountable and make sure the appropriate steps and safeguards are in place," said NFIB's Mike Elmendorf.
