Half of the kindergartners who entered the English-Spanish immersion program in August at Melrose Leadership Academy in Oakland, Calif., didn't speak Spanish, but it didn't take them long to adapt to a classroom where teachers never speak English. By the time students finish eighth grade, they are expected to be bilingual in reading, writing and speech.
