A Florida State University professor is predicting a need for hundreds of new high-school chemistry teachers in the state because of an influx of new chemistry students. Paul Cottle says a new graduation requirement that students must pass chemistry or physics will lead about 40,000 additional students to enroll in chemistry courses. Cottle says the mandate, which will be in place for students beginning high school in 2013 or beyond, will require districts to begin recruiting and training chemistry teachers soon.
