The medical center's Institutional Review Board said patients with "devastating facial deformities" may be considered for transplant. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center already is approved for hand transplants. Surgeons at UPMC use the Pittsburgh Protocol, in which some of the donor's bone marrow is injected into the transplant recipient soon after the operation to reduce the risk of rejection and allow lowered doses of anti-rejection drugs.
