The Senate Finance Committee took up the question of whether to extend or make permanent some of the tax cuts adopted in 2001 that will expire at the end of this year. Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., the committee chairman, said the big issue is how to deal with the expanding federal budget deficit. Douglas Holtz-Eakin, president of the American Action Forum, said adopting temporary fixes to the tax law introduces undesirable uncertainty.
