U.S. commercial air travel has been artificially constrained by the government's failure to update an air-traffic control system that dates back to the 1950s, according to Continental Airlines CEO Jeff Smisek. He told a travel conference on Tuesday that airlines such as Continental are reluctant to invest in next-generation avionics until the government has shown it is serious about installing ground stations and other hardware. "We would invest a lot of money and then the government doesn't deliver on its end of the bargain, and then all we've done is put a bunch of fancy stuff on airplanes that we can't use," he said.
