Kansas City Southern earned a $43,084 grant to lower emissions on some of its locomotives. The company installed automatic engine shutdown-startup devices on five locomotives, cutting down idling time, curbing emissions and conserving diesel fuel. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources recognized KCS for its environmental contribution. "By retrofitting the locomotives with this technology, there will be more than 1,400 tons of emissions avoided over the remaining life of the locomotives," said Mark Templeton, DNR director.
