By the time memory loss and other symptoms of Alzheimer's disease appear, it may be too late for a patient's brain. Spinal fluid tests and PET scans of the brain can accurately show whether patients with minor cognitive impairment have the disease, allowing researchers to test new drugs that might halt Alzheimer's progression. However, some doctors question the utility in performing a potentially painful test for a disease that currently cannot be cured.
