Researchers at North Carolina State University are using propane-fueled fireballs to test equipment for the Department of Defense. Propane flames heat a test chamber to more than 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and researchers monitor the ability of different materials and armors to protect "PyroMan" -- a dummy equipped with dozens of thermal sensors. "These data tell where we must improve the protective clothing," says researcher Roger Barker.
