To keep workers engaged and productive during challenging times, research shows employers need to take steps such as communicating company progress, connecting a worker's contributions to the company's mission and recognizing their efforts. "[W]hen you think about asking people to do so much more with so much less, they need something in return. And recognition is one of the things that can help with that," says Denise McLain, a Gallup senior consultant.
