Even with constant advisories about rabies, awareness is still low, particularly in rural areas, said Dr. Beverlee Nix, a zoonosis-control veterinarian for the Texas Department of State Health Services. Rabies transmitted to humans most commonly come from skunks, bats, raccoons, foxes and coyotes, Nix and other experts said. Ways to prevent rabies infection include vaccinating pets against rabies and avoiding animals that are showing strange behavior, Nix said.
