NCA's government affairs team is working with industry representatives and others to repeal a sales tax on candy in Washington state. "The great thing is that our members in Washington have been very active on this issue with visits to the state capitol, letters to the editor, and radio and TV interviews," NCA's Chris Coleman said. "State budgets have shortfalls to address, but this coalition sends a strong message to other states."
Kraft and PepsiCo are embracing Greek food, introducing yogurts and hummus and backing them with marketing campaigns. Kraft is launching the Athenos brand of Greek yogurt, and PepsiCo's Frito-Lay division has begun TV ads for Sabra hummus.
Ghirardelli Chocolate will be making a donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation as part of a sweepstakes promoting its Pink Ribbon packs of Luxe Milk bars. The company says it also will give $1 for each code entered by consumers to participate in the sweepstakes.
Cadbury's packages for Dairy Milk bars will no longer carry the "glass and a half" phrase indicating how much milk goes into a half-pound of the chocolate after more than 80 years of use. The wording has been changed to, "The equivalent of 426ml of fresh liquid milk in every 227g of milk chocolate."
A survey of 1,000 shoppers by Lindt & Sprüngli found that factors including weather, occasion, mood and time of day influence chocolate purchases. The survey also found that 55% of shoppers seeking an escape choose milk chocolate, while 44% select chocolate with nuts, 36% opt for dark chocolate and 23% pick white chocolate.
