Language barriers not only isolate people, they make America less competitive and limit the country's ability to address international issues, writes Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif. Chu writes that she supports legislation that would improve language programs within schools and that she plans to propose funding language education from an early age. "Promoting multilingualism in our nation's schools ensures that the next generation of American students won't just travel the globe, they'll shape it," Chu writes.
