A Sam's Club near Houston has been renovated and now sells prepared meals, imported cheeses and more fresh food. The revamp, which also includes wider aisles and lower shelves, is part of a national effort to remodel 150 stores in the Wal-Mart chain.
Grocery stores are hiring registered dietitians to give shoppers nutrition information and help them make healthy food choices. A recent survey found 77% of shoppers wanted nutritional services such as in-store dietitians.
The Corn Refiners Association is asking the Food and Drug Administration for permission to change the name high-fructose corn syrup to corn sugar. Food producers and consumers have been moving away from high-fructose corn syrup, perceiving it as less natural than sugar.
In a survey from Hay Group, retailers expressed confidence that holiday sales in 2010 will be better than in 2009. The survey found 64% expecting sales to go up, compared with 28% in 2009, and no expectations of decreased holiday sales, compared with 36% who predicted a decline the previous year.
