The Council of Europe has published a powerful video with key speakers on gender equality in the media, and a related recommendation urging member states to take specific measures that would promote such equality. The new video features Laura Bates of the Everyday Sexism Project who recently achieved a win in her campaign to lobby Facebook over pages that glorify violence against women. She and others participated in a Council of Europe conference on gender equality, held in Amsterdam and organized with the Dutch government. See the video.
Lilly Ledbetter has reached an agreement with producer and director Rachel Feldman to film a biopic chronicling her struggle for equal pay for women. The Alabama native, who fought decades of harassment and cronyism at a Goodyear plant, was the inspiration for President Barack Obama’s Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act of 2009.
Academy Award-winning actor Geena Davis will join a distinguished list of presenters including former U.S. President Bill Clinton, UN Women chief Michelle Bachelet and Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli at the Club de Madrid’s conference in Little Rock, Ark., next week. Topics for the conference, "Harnessing 21st Century Solutions: a Focus on Women," will include women in art and the media, equality in business and anti-trafficking efforts.
