A U.S. study showed that the death rate of patients diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in the late 1970s was significantly lower than that of patients diagnosed in the 1960s. However, the study still found a mortality rate seven times higher than that of the general population. The lead study author said the findings are "incredibly encouraging" and efforts to improve diabetes care should continue to reduce death rates.
