An American Medical Association online survey of 2,400 physicians found that 64% have difficulty figuring out which procedures need an insurer's preauthorization, and 67% have difficulty with drug preauthorization requirements. Doctors also said they frequently wait up to a week for an answer, and 37% said insurers deny at least 20% of their initial requests for tests and procedures; 57% said insurers deny at least 20% of drug preauthorization requests. About 75% support automated preauthorization, the survey found.
