Social media poses a significant challenge to the government of Saudi Arabia, experts say, with Twitter usage increasing and more than 3 million Saudis using Facebook. The kingdom's rulers have so far grudgingly tolerated social media use, but it recently issued guidelines that ban bloggers and tweeters from posting content that criticizes Islam or threatens public order. "It's one of the big questions ahead for Saudi Arabia, how this authoritarian regime will live with the freedom and chaos that the Internet represents," says Saudi-based journalist Robert Lacey.
