A meta-analysis of eight trials found that people who underwent bariatric surgery were 45% less likely to die compared with those who did not undergo the operation. The risk for heart-related deaths was 29% lower for those who had gastric banding and 52% lower for those who had gastric bypass compared with those who didn't have surgery, according to the review in Annals of Surgery.
