Dr. John Pedersen, Akron General Medical Center's chair of plastic surgery, used a da Vinci robot to harvest muscle from a woman's abdomen and implant it in her knee. The patient, 30-year-old bone cancer survivor, had a severe infection in the knee, which had been replaced a few months earlier. Pedersen also uses the robot, which allows for small incisions that heal faster with less risk of infection, to harvest abdominal blood vessels, fat and skin for post-mastectomy breast reconstruction.
