Data on 9.2 million emergency department visits in California during 2007 revealed high rates of patients who left the ED without being seen, with percentages varying from 0% to more than 20%, according to facilities. Hospitals in communities with low income or poor health coverage as well as teaching hospitals, county-owned hospitals and trauma centers had higher patient departure rates compared with other health care facilities, the study in the Annals of Emergency Medicine found.
