This week's quick fact

Characteristics such as age, gender and ethnicity can influence fear of failure in prospective entrepreneurs. Young people may not have families and mortgages to support -- in a sense having less to lose. Immigrants may be shut out of more stable or lucrative jobs and therefore have fewer options for generating income. The institutional environment can also affect this; for instance, bankruptcy legislation may deter would-be entrepreneurs. --Global Entrepreneurship Monitor 2010 Report
