The movement in Europe to explore the use of bio-based materials and renewable feedstocks brings a host of regulatory and technical issues in implementation, writes chemical analyst John Baker. ICIS co-sponsored an industry roundtable last month to gather expert opinion on how companies can best adopt the bio-based approach into production methods. The roundtable, however, found that "most chemicals will not be bio-based any time soon, and that until the regulatory framework is revamped ... Europe might just miss out on the development of the bio-based economy," Baker writes.
