Researchers warn that the "globalization of fat stigma" may soon become the cultural norm as different countries ramp up efforts to combat obesity. Even places such as American Samoa and Puerto Rico, which historically are more accepting of larger bodies, had high stigma scores, according to the report in the journal Current Anthropology. The stigma may be influenced by anti-obesity campaigns that come across as critical of overweight people instead of the environmental and social factors affecting weight gain, the lead study author said.
