Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh are working with the Department of Defense to determine whether adult stem cells can prevent the body from re-absorbing autologous fat grafts. A patient's own tissue is "our best replacement tissue after trauma or cancer therapy," Plastic Surgery Chief Dr. J. Peter Rubin said. Researchers are injecting stem cell-enriched fats into the faces of wounded soldiers to rebuild soft tissue.
