Scientists at Harvard University and the Broad Institute in Boston identified 11 genes that allow Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasites to develop resistance to standard treatments, according to the study in the journal PLoS Genetics. The findings could help researchers understand how the mosquito-borne parasites fend off the effects of malaria drugs and develop more potent treatments, said one of the researchers.
