The annual number of emergency department visits for football-related injuries among U.S. youths ages 6 to 17 increased from 247,094 in 1990 to 346,772 in 2007,
according to data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System. Researchers found that 6- to 12-year-olds were often injured at home, while 12- to-17-year-olds were more likely to suffer injuries at school and accounted for three-fifths of the total visits.
