General Motors is using beam-mounted overhead mechanical arms known as "flying robots" to improve versatility and efficiency at one of its engine plants. The high-tech machinery can handle a range of manufacturing applications, says manager Tom Shea, providing long-term job security to workers who learn to operate the devices. "We'll be loading V-8s and four-cylinders with the same equipment," Shea said of the robots. "The only difference is what we call the end-of-arm tooling."
