Food Lion started a pilot program to revamp stores, aiming to make that plan universal by the end of 2012. The chain is implementing wishes of surveyed customers: fresher produce, quicker checkout, better parking-lot lighting, cleaner stores and less-cluttered aisles. With reduced sales last quarter, Food Lion is facing competition from Wal-Mart Stores, Harris Teeter, Lowe's Food Stores and Target.
