The mass deployment of smart meters to power the next-generation energy grid is expected to lead to an explosion of machine-to-machine connections in the utilities sector over the next decade, reaching 1.5 billion in 2020. That's roughly 15 times the 100 million connections that a report from Machina Research says are currently in use. The report says smart meters will account for 99% of M2M connections in the utilities industry by the end of the decade.
