The number of reported Lyme disease cases among animals in Virginia increased from 22 in 1999 to about 1,000 in 2007. The disease also was detected in more than 1,200 in-state residents in 2010. Researchers say the rise in Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses such as ehrlichiosis and Rocky Mountain spotted fever could be attributed to an uptick in deer and tick numbers.
