Defense Secretary Robert Gates' impending retirement at the end of June has some concerned that unless he certifies the military is ready to end the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, the transition to his successor could delay the repeal's implementation for months. Gates says he will certify once the military has received related training and top military officials indicate they're ready to make the change. A White House spokesman reiterated President Barack Obama's pledge that repeal implementation would happen this year.
