Fluid therapy is essential in treating calves suffering dehydration related to diarrhea, but workers not trained to notice early signs may wait too long to administer fluids, said North Carolina State University veterinarian Geof Smith. Smith advises large-animal veterinarians and their dairy farmer clients to train feeders to look for diarrhea and other signs including sunken eyes, calves that won't drink milk and calves that won't stand up.
