Field commanders in Afghanistan and Iraq have found the Shadow, Puma and other smaller unmanned drones to be highly successful in areas, such as surveillance, intelligence and reconnaissance, says Tim Owings, deputy program manager for Army unmanned systems. DARPA is also developing a small drone application, says James Lasswell, technical director of the Warfighting Lab for the Marine Corps.
