A study of 1,142 people with advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease found that those who were given 250 milligrams of antibiotic azithromycin daily for one year had a 27% reduced risk of flare-ups compared with those who received placebo. Researchers noted in The New England Journal of Medicine that those who took the antibiotic also reported improvements in their quality of life.
