Dogs can detect lung cancer by sniffing peoples' breath, German researchers said this week, but developing dogs' ability to become cancer-detectors could prove challenging, said veterinarian and AVMA past president Bonnie Beaver. Dogs have to have a natural drive to learn to smell things, she said, and teaching them to detect cancer cells is hindered by the fact that human trainers can't smell the cells.
