A follow-up study in the European Heart Journal found that patients taking Pfizer's cholesterol-lowering statin Lipitor had a 14% lower death rate compared with placebo users. The finding was attributed mainly to a significant reduction in mortality from respiratory and infectious diseases. A clinical trial of Lipitor ended in 2003 after the statin demonstrated effectiveness
in preventing stroke and heart attack.
