Utilities seeking to upgrade their aging power plants and comply with renewable-energy standards need to balance the need to lower cost while providing more renewable energy, experts and insiders said. "It is a challenge, because you have customers who just want the lowest cost and customers who want the most renewable energy," said David Eves, CEO of Xcel Energy's Colorado unit. "Some day utilities are going to figure out a way to let their customers choose," Eves said.
