Researchers have applied GIS and mapping software to seek the cause of a disease that has ravaged coral in the Caribbean during the past three decades. By plotting data collected in 2004 around Buck Island Reef National Monument in the U.S. Virgin Islands, researchers identified areas of coral, where white-band disease was prevalent, to gain insights into the disorder. "With these methods, we gain a better understanding of the disease's distribution across the reef," said Jason Blackburn, a University of Florida geographer and co-author of the paper.
