Hospitals are using sponge dressings with the disinfectant chlorhexidine and catheters that contain antibacterials or antibiotics to help prevent catheter-related bloodstream infections. The CDC has recommended hospitals seek out such high-tech solutions when infection-control methods, including checklists, are not enough to reduce infections, especially in busy ICUs where catheters are handled dozens of times each day.
