A group of scientists at the University of Illinois said that they have developed a new strain of yeast that can simultaneously convert biomass from red seaweed into fermentable sugars glucose and galactose. Current yeast varieties normally consume galactose only after the glucose has been processed. "It's a faster, superior process. Our view is that this discovery greatly enhances the economic viability of marine biofuels and gives us a better product," said researcher Suk-Jin Ha.
