A summer academic program in California directs talented low-income middle-school students toward a future in college by having them taught by older students and peers. Gifted sixth-graders in 12 middle schools in the San Jose area are recruited for the Breakthrough Silicon Valley initiative and the six-year commitment includes three summer programs, which offer small classes, advanced learning and activities. The peer teachers are given extensive training.
